Sustainability and Climate Action Plan

Sustainability and Climate Action Plan

At Finch Nest Preschool, we are committed to fostering environmental and climate awareness in young children, their families, and our staff. We aim to create a safe, resilient, and sustainable learning environment that models climate-conscious choices and prepares our community for a changing world. Our commitment aligns with the Department for Education's sustainability and climate change strategy, which aimed for all educational settings to have a sustainability lead and a climate action plan by 2025. We are also committed to complying with the Government’s
goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. As a setting dedicated to nurturing young minds, we believe it is our responsibility to lead by example. We aim to instil a culture of environmental responsibility in our preschool community, ensuring that sustainability becomes a part of our daily curriculum and routine.

We are implementing a structured approach to sustainability through four key areas: decarbonisation, adaptation and resilience, biodiversity, and climate education. Each of these areas supports our goal of reducing our environmental impact while fostering a deeper connection between children and nature.

Our Sustainability and Climate Plan

Decarbonisation

  • Ensuring electrical devices and lights are turned off when not in use

  • Ensuring electrical points are turned off when not in use

  • Purchasing items that are more energy efficient

  • Setting the thermostat to a lower temperature

  • Staff and pupils are encouraged to wear warmer clothing

  • Closing doors and windows when heating is on

  • Ensuring the heating is not in use in warmer weather

  • Minimising waste through recycling, food waste and general waste being collected separately

  • Recycling second-hand toys and equipment, rather than purchasing new

  • Sharing second-hand uniform with other pupils

  • Pupils and staff using re-usable water bottles

  • Having no packaging waste at lunchtime

  • Reducing food waste by educating pupils to take what they need

  • Using LED lighting in the preschool

Adaptation and Resilience

  • Using daily outdoor experiences to enhance pupils' connection to nature and outdoors

  • Educating the children about the wider world, habitats, the world we live in and how to look after it as part of our curriculum

  • Educating the children on weather and climate change

  • Observing seasonal changes

  • Educating children on water conservation through teeth cleaning, re-usable water bottles and washing hands

  • Re-using water from activities to water the plants

  • Using eco-friendly, recycled or donated resources where possible

Biodiversity

  • Nurturing insects and wildlife together through growing and releasing butterflies, creating bee hydration stations, maintaining minibeast hotels and making bird feeders

  • Planning for days within our curriculum that promote
environmental initiatives and teach the children how
to care for the environment, nature and all living
things preserving the world around us

  • Planting and growing flowers, fruits and vegetables

  • Using unavoidable food waste for compost

Climate Education

  • Regularly planning activities and learning opportunities for climate education
